Code2College is an Austin-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to close the opportunity gap in technology for underrepresented students. Through hands-on technical training, mentorship, and paid internship experiences, Code2College prepares high school and college students from underserved communities to thrive in the tech workforce. Since its founding, the organization has served thousands of students across Central Texas.
HireWheel is the workforce platform built by Code2College to connect its trained student talent with real employer projects. It handles the full lifecycle — from project posting and student matching to milestone tracking and final delivery. Think of it as the place where Code2College's training meets real-world work.
Code2College is the nonprofit organization; HireWheel is its technology platform. Students complete Code2College's technical training programs, then use HireWheel to showcase their skills, get matched with projects, and build professional portfolios. Employers use HireWheel to post projects and work directly with Code2College talent. All revenue generated through HireWheel projects flows back to support Code2College's mission.
HireWheel serves three main audiences: Employers who want to post projects and hire emerging tech talent, Students (Interns) in the Code2College program who are ready to take on real-world work, and Coordinators from Code2College who oversee student caseloads and ensure projects run smoothly. Anyone can create an employer account and start exploring the platform.
Not at all. While Code2College is headquartered in Austin, Texas, HireWheel projects can be completed entirely remotely. Employers from anywhere in the United States can post projects and work with our students. Many projects involve software development, data analysis, and design work that is well-suited to remote collaboration.
Student privacy is a top priority. Intern profiles are only visible to logged-in employers and Code2College staff — they are never exposed publicly or to search engines. All data is transmitted over HTTPS with industry-standard security headers. Personally identifiable information is stored securely, and we follow data-minimization principles, collecting only what is necessary to run the platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Employers
You can post a wide range of technology projects including web and mobile development, data analysis, UI/UX design, QA testing, and more. Projects should be well-scoped with clear deliverables. Our guided project builder walks you through defining the scope, required skills, and milestones so that students know exactly what is expected.
HireWheel interns are Code2College students who have completed rigorous technical training in software development, data analytics, or related fields. Many are high school juniors and seniors or college undergraduates from underrepresented backgrounds. Each intern has a profile showcasing their skills, coursework, and portfolio projects so you can evaluate fit before reaching out.
After creating your employer account, you can browse the intern directory and filter by skills, experience level, and availability. When you find a strong candidate, you can invite them to your project directly through the platform. Code2College coordinators are also available to help recommend students who match your project's requirements.
The process has four main phases: 1) Post — use our project builder to define scope, skills, and milestones. 2) Match — browse intern profiles or let our coordinators recommend candidates, then invite your top picks. 3) Build — the intern works through milestones, submitting deliverables at each stage for your review and feedback. 4) Deliver — once all milestones are approved, the project is marked complete and both sides can leave reviews.
Pricing varies by project type, scope, and duration — from quick tasks to multi-week engagements. During the project builder process you will see transparent pricing before you commit. This covers the intern's compensation and a platform fee that directly supports Code2College's mission. Every dollar you invest goes toward giving underrepresented students real-world tech experience.
Most projects run between 4 and 8 weeks, though shorter and longer engagements are possible depending on scope. You define the timeline and milestones during the project setup. Interns typically dedicate 10–20 hours per week, and you can track progress in real time through the milestone dashboard.
Each project is broken into milestones — clear checkpoints with defined deliverables. As the intern completes each milestone, they submit their work for your review. You can approve the deliverable, request revisions, or leave feedback directly on the platform. This structured approach keeps projects on track and ensures both sides stay aligned throughout the engagement.
The milestone review process is designed to catch issues early. At each milestone you can request revisions before approving. If you run into broader concerns, Code2College coordinators are available to mediate and help find a resolution. Our goal is to ensure every project delivers real value while providing students a supportive learning environment.
Creating an employer account and browsing intern profiles is completely free. You can draft and scope a project at no cost using our project builder. Payment is only required when you are ready to launch a project and match with an intern. This lets you explore the platform and evaluate talent before making any financial commitment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Interns
After logging in, head to your dashboard and click "Edit Profile." Fill in your skills, experience, education, and upload your resume. The more complete your profile, the more likely employers are to reach out. You can also add links to your GitHub, LinkedIn, and portfolio to give employers a fuller picture of your abilities.
Your profile becomes visible to employers once all required fields are complete and your account is marked as "hireable" by a Code2College coordinator. This ensures that only students who are ready for real-world projects appear in employer searches. If your profile isn't showing up, check with your coordinator to confirm your hireable status.
Employers browse intern profiles filtered by skills and experience, and they may invite you directly to their project. Code2College coordinators also recommend students for projects based on skill alignment and availability. When you receive a project invitation, you will be notified on your dashboard and can review the project details before accepting.
Yes, you can edit your profile at any time from your dashboard. We recommend updating your skills and resume regularly as you complete new modules, finish projects, or learn new technologies. Keeping your profile current helps employers find you for the right opportunities.
Your profile is only visible to logged-in employers on HireWheel and Code2College staff. It is never shared publicly or indexed by search engines. You have full control over what information you include, and you can contact your coordinator at any time if you have privacy concerns.
Learning modules are self-paced lessons built right into HireWheel covering topics like Python, SQL, web development, and professional skills. Each module includes interactive activities, coding challenges, and quizzes. Completing modules earns you XP, levels up your profile, and demonstrates to employers that you are actively building your skills beyond the classroom.
You earn experience points (XP) by completing learning modules, submitting activities, and engaging with the platform. As you accumulate XP you level up, which is displayed on your profile. The progression system gives employers a quick sense of how active and invested you are in your professional development. It also unlocks achievements that appear on your dashboard.
Yes! HireWheel projects are paid internship experiences. Compensation details are outlined when you accept a project invitation. Payment is managed through Code2College and is tied to milestone completion, so you are rewarded as you deliver quality work throughout the project.
Go to your profile settings and enter your GitHub username. Once connected, HireWheel can pull in your public repositories and contribution activity to enrich your profile. This gives employers insight into your coding habits and project experience. It also powers the AI skill analysis feature, which generates a detailed breakdown of your technical strengths.
The AI skill analysis is a feature that reviews your GitHub activity, completed coursework, and module submissions to generate a comprehensive report of your technical abilities. It identifies your strongest skill areas, highlights evidence from your work, and gives employers a data-driven view of what you can do. You can generate or refresh your skill analysis from your profile page at any time.
